Napoleon IIIrd is James Mabbett, a solo artist from Holmfirth in Yorkshire (although the live setup in the film above includes an accomplished six-piece backing ensemble). Mabbett's second studio album, a fully formed alt-pop epic entitled "Christiania", was lauded in the mainstream UK' media, including four star reviews in NME, Word, Uncut, MOJO, The Sunday Times, The Observer and Drowned In Sound.
This surge of appreciation saw Napoleon IIIrd start to build a profile throughout mainland Europe with a Wild Beasts support tour, tours of Spain and Scandinavia, and one-off dates for Iceland Airwaves, Tanned Tin festival and PopkommLive in Berlin. The single, "The Unknown Unknown", has a video that topped the MySpace video chart, and it was a number one hit on the global blog aggregator Hype Machine.
Often compared favourably to mainstream psychedelic pop bands like Animal Collective and The Flaming Lips, Napoleon IIIrd's press profile and his current fully-fledged live show have shifted him up a gear : from a cult solo project to a widescreen festival band and an emerging international artist.
